Kohtem Princewill Sambit is a passionate youth and environmental activist committed to advancing advocacy, good governance, and youth empowerment in Cameroon. His program, Evergreen Save-Us Environmental, equips young people across Edea, Tiko, Limbe, and neighbouring communities to collect plastic waste, protect marine ecosystems, and create livelihood opportunities through partnerships with local recycling companies. Kohtem’s motivation stems from witnessing the scale of plastic pollution in Cameroon’s coastal and urban areas and the lack of youth-focused environmental solutions. Through his work, he is helping to build a committed generation of young leaders who are driving community-led restoration efforts and reducing plastic pollution across Cameroon.

In the first year of the Accelerator Fund, Kohtem strengthened local youth leadership through capacity-building workshops on coastal waste management in Limbe’s Batoke community, equipping more than 100 young people with practical environmental skills. The project expanded its visibility through the successful Evergreen Save-Us Environmental Debate and Public Speaking Championship, held across Yaoundé, Buea, and Limbe, which reached over 100 students and fostered leadership, critical thinking, and climate advocacy. Community activities, such as the planting of over 50 trees in Adzap and the collection of more than two tons of plastic waste, directly engaged over 1,000 people and reached an estimated 5,000 indirectly. These efforts strengthened climate resilience and encouraged behavioural shifts toward sustainable waste management.

I appreciate the Ban Ki-moon Foundation for its belief in youth-led solutions and for walking with us throughout this journey. The support and visibility provided by BKMF over the past year have not only strengthened our project but also elevated my leadership, credibility, and capacity to mobilize for impact across multiple regions of Cameroon.

Kohtem is scaling the Evergreen Save-Us Environmental Project into a national youth-led movement by expanding to Garoua in northern Cameroon. The program's current phase focuses on three pillars: large-scale tree planting, an expanded Evergreen Environmental Debate and Public Speaking Championship, and intensified plastic waste sensitization and collection campaigns. The prom plans to engage more youth in Cameroon, plant a large number of trees, including fruit and medicinal species, and support schools in integrating environmental education and debate into their programs.
